Morocco's charm tradition is one of the richest in the Islamic world, blending Arab-Islamic practice with Berber animistic tradition and Sufi mysticism. The khamsa (hand of Fatima) is omnipresent — hammered in brass on door knockers, painted in henna on hands, cast in silver as pendants — and is Morocco's most iconic protective symbol. The evil eye (ayn al-hasad or in Berber: tit) is guarded against with blue beads, sprigs of rue, alum, and specific Quranic recitations.
Moroccan Berber silver jewelry — particularly the fibula brooch and triangular Fatima-hand pendants — is both beautiful adornment and active protective amulet. The Sufi brotherhoods (tariqas) active throughout Morocco produce amulets and blessed objects through their sheikhs. The Moroccan star (eight-pointed star) appears in the tilework of every medina and carries auspicious geometric meaning. The color blue — particularly the blue of Chefchaouen — wards off evil.
