Selenite

Selenite is a form of gypsum (hydrated calcium sulphate) named after the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene, because of its pearly, silvery-white luminosity. Unlike most minerals, selenite is soft (Mohs 2, easily scratched by a fingernail) and can be split into thin, flexible sheets — historically used as window panes before glass technology. Morocco produces enormous masses of selenite in alabaster-like formations; the famous Cave of the Crystals (Cueva de los Cristales) in Naica, Mexico, contains selenite crystals of 11 metres length and up to 55 tonnes weight — the largest natural crystals in the world.

Selenoite occupies a unique position among healing crystals: it is considered self-cleansing and, more importantly, capable of cleansing other crystals. A selenite plate or bowl is the preferred tool for cleansing crystal collections — other stones placed on selenite are believed to have their energy reset and refreshed overnight. This property makes selenite the indispensable utility player of any crystal practice, the stone that keeps all other stones at their optimal functioning.

In metaphysical tradition, selenite connects to the crown chakra and to the divine feminine principle of luminous clarity. Its pure white light is believed to dissolve energetic blockages, access higher guidance, and bring the expanded perspective of the higher self to situations that feel confusing or stuck at ground level. It is used in meditation spaces, healing rooms, and on altars as a constant source of high-frequency, cleansing light.
