Charm Traditions in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's Shona and Ndebele peoples carry deep traditions of ancestral veneration through which the spirits of the deceased communicate through spirit mediums (svikiro) and n'anga (traditional healers). The Zimbabwe bird — a carved soapstone fish eagle found at Great Zimbabwe — is the national symbol and an ancient emblem of royal protective power. Specific stones, animal parts, and plants are used in protective ngozi charms.

The Ndebele, originally from South Africa's Zulu tradition, maintain their own protective beadwork traditions. Christianity is widely practiced and crosses and rosary beads are common protective objects. The lion — national animal — carries deep associations of protective ancestral power in both Shona and Ndebele tradition.
