Charm Traditions in Guinea

Guinea's predominantly Muslim Fula (Peul) and Mandinka peoples carry a strong tradition of gris-gris amulets blessed by marabouts. The gris-gris here takes many forms — leather pouches, animal horns, cloth bundles — all containing Quranic verses and protective organic materials. Wrestling and hunting ceremonies involve elaborate amulet preparation.

The Baga people of the coastal region are known for their spectacular nimba (shoulder mask representing a female ancestor of fertility and prosperity). Cowrie shells are widely used in divination and ceremonial dress. Traditional healers (balantigi) create specific plant-based amulets for their clients.
