Amethyst

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, coloured by iron impurities and irradiation within the crystal lattice. Found in massive quantities in Brazil and Uruguay (often lining entire cave walls in spectacular geodes) and in the vivid, deep purple 'Siberian' quality from Zambia, amethyst has been one of humanity's most prized gemstones for at least 25,000 years. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed it prevented intoxication — the word 'amethyst' derives from the Greek amethystos, meaning 'not drunk' — and drinking vessels were sometimes carved from amethyst to allow wine without inebriation.

The Roman Catholic Church adopted amethyst as the stone of bishops and cardinals, believing its purple colour represented the suffering and royalty of Christ. Medieval European soldiers wore amethyst in battle, believing it kept the mind cool and calm under pressure and promoted healing of wounds. Across cultures amethyst has been consistently associated with spiritual authority, wisdom, sobriety of mind, and the capacity to access higher states of consciousness.
