Lapis Lazuli
Afghanistan
The royal blue stone of wisdom and truth, carried as a charm of intellectual power, inner vision, and the authority of those who speak truth to power.
The deep blue stone of rational mind and inner truth, carried as a charm for clear thinking, honest self-examination, and the calm authority of one who trusts their own perception.
Sodalite is a rich royal-blue mineral of the feldspathoid group, typically veined with white calcite and occasionally with patches of orange hackmanite (a variety that exhibits tenebrescence — fading from pink-orange to white in light, then returning to pink in the dark). Named for its high sodium content, sodalite was first described from specimens collected in Greenland in 1811. Canada's Bancroft area produced the famous 'Princess Blue' sodalite that was shipped back to England as a decorative stone after Princess Patricia visited the quarry in 1901.
Sodalite is called the 'Poet's Stone' or 'Stone of Logic' in crystal traditions because of its dual association with rational, analytical thinking and with authentic creative expression. It appears to simultaneously sharpen the mind's critical faculty and open the heart to the vulnerable honesty that genuine poetry requires — a rare combination. It is associated with the third eye chakra for perception and the throat chakra for truthful expression.
In contemporary crystal work, sodalite is used to calm an overactive mind, to enhance the ability to examine one's own patterns and behaviours with honesty and without self-judgment, and to support the kind of genuine self-knowledge that underlies authentic decision-making. It is particularly helpful for overthinkers, perfectionists, and those who find it difficult to trust their own perceptions in the presence of more dominant personalities.
Rational clarity, honest self-examination, authentic expression of inner truth, calm confidence in one's own perceptions, and the peaceful authority of a mind at ease with itself.
Keep on a desk during writing, creative work, or any activity requiring honest introspection. Wear during therapy or self-examination processes where honest perception is essential. Meditate with sodalite at the third eye to clarify your own values and perceptions. Carry when entering situations where you wish to maintain clear thinking under social pressure.
Hackmanite — the pink-orange variety of sodalite — is one of the few minerals that exhibits tenebrescence (reversible photochromism): it fades from vivid orange-pink to colourless in bright light and then slowly returns to colour in the dark. This living, light-responsive behaviour makes it one of the most scientifically fascinating varieties of any mineral.
Lapis lazuli is a rock composed of multiple minerals and typically contains visible gold pyrite flecks. Sodalite is a single mineral, lacks pyrite, and has a more uniform blue colour. Sodalite is also lighter in weight than lapis. Under UV light, sodalite sometimes fluoresces orange; lapis does not.
Excellent for meditation — its calming blue energy and third-eye activation qualities make it one of the most recommended stones for establishing a regular meditation practice. It quiets mental chatter and supports the sustained inner attention that deep meditation requires.
Yes — it supports honest, clear, and rational communication in group settings. It helps the holder maintain their own clear perception in the face of group pressure and express their genuine views with calm confidence rather than defensive aggression.
