Mediterranean Scarab

The scarab beetle — kheper in ancient Egyptian — was one of the most powerful protective amulets of the ancient world, and through the mechanism of Mediterranean trade it spread from Egypt throughout Greece, Rome, and the entirety of the ancient European trading world. The Phoenicians traded scarab amulets extensively, and Egyptian, Phoenician, and Greek scarabs have been found at archaeological sites from Sardinia to Iberia, from North Africa to Britain, making them one of the first internationally traded lucky charms in history.

The scarab's sacred meaning in Egypt was profound: the dung beetle's habit of rolling balls of dung across the ground was seen as analogous to the sun god Ra rolling the sun across the sky. The ball of dung from which new beetles emerged was equated with the primordial mound from which creation arose. The scarab thus represented self-creation, eternal renewal, and the life-giving power of the sun — three of the most powerful lucky concepts in any tradition.

In the Mediterranean world beyond Egypt, the scarab's original theological complexity was largely replaced by a more general but deeply felt sense of the beetle as an auspicious and powerful protective object. Roman soldiers wore scarab rings; Greek merchants carried scarab seals; Italian traders collected Egyptian scarabs as prestige objects and protective amulets. This diffusion means that the scarab has been a European lucky charm for at least 3,000 years — one of the longest-running continuous luck traditions on the continent.
