The volcanic glass of truth and protection, carried as a powerful charm for revealing hidden truths, cutting karmic ties, and shielding against negative energy.
The premier protective crystal, worn as a powerful charm against negative energy, electromagnetic radiation, and psychic attack.
Black tourmaline (schorl) is a boron silicate mineral that forms in elongated prismatic crystals with distinctive vertical striations. It is the most abundant of the tourmaline family and is found worldwide, with major deposits in Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria. Mineralogically, tourmaline is remarkable for its pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties — it generates a small electric charge when heated or subjected to mechanical pressure, which many crystal practitioners connect to its powerful energetic qualities.
Black tourmaline has been used as a protective talisman across multiple cultures. In Germanic tradition, the stone was called schorl and kept near doorways to ward off negativity. In Asian traditions it was placed beneath buildings during construction to neutralise harmful earth energies. Contemporary crystal practitioners consider black tourmaline the single most effective stone for protection against negative energy of all kinds — environmental, interpersonal, and psychic.
The stone is particularly valued in modern contexts for its reported ability to absorb and neutralise electromagnetic radiation from electronic devices. Many people keep black tourmaline near computers and mobile phones for this reason. It is also used extensively as a psychic shield, worn or placed at the boundary of spaces to prevent the intrusion of others' negative emotions or intentions. Unlike many protective crystals, black tourmaline is considered to transform negative energy rather than simply blocking it.
Powerful protection against negative energy in all forms, psychic shielding, grounding, energetic boundary-setting, and the transmutation of negativity into neutral or positive force.
Place at each corner of a room or home for full protective coverage. Wear as a pendant or keep in a pocket when entering challenging environments. Place near electronic devices to address EMF concerns. Carry when dealing with energy-draining people or situations. Cleanse regularly by placing on a selenite plate.
Black tourmaline was known to Dutch traders in the 18th century as 'aschentrekker' (ash-puller) because when heated, the stone becomes electrically charged and can attract ashes and other small particles to itself — the same piezoelectric property that makes it such a compelling energetic protective stone.
More often than most crystals, as it actively absorbs negative energy. Cleanse weekly during normal use, or immediately after intense protective work. Running water, sunlight, selenite plates, or burial in the earth for 24 hours all work well.
Crystal practitioners believe so, and the stone's piezoelectric properties do interact with electromagnetic fields. While no scientific studies confirm EMF neutralisation, many users report feeling less drained around electronics when using black tourmaline nearby.
It is generally considered water-safe for brief periods, but prolonged submersion can cause surface damage to the stone. Cleanse with water by holding under running water rather than soaking.
